Tips for Identifying ʻIo

Size & Shape

The Hawaiian hawk is a medium-sized raptor with broad wings and a short tail. Adults typically measure 16-18 inches in length.

Color Variations

ʻIo have two color morphs: light (pale underparts with dark upperparts) and dark (entirely dark brown). Both morphs can occur in the same nest.

Behavior

Look for soaring flight patterns, perching on tall trees or poles, and distinctive calls that sound like a high-pitched "eeeh-oh".
